A History of Thor Comics

The Thor comic is based on the Marvel Comics superhero that is based on Norse mythology about the thunder god. The Thor comic superhero appears in the comic books that were created by the editor Stan Lee and published by Marvel Comics. The writer and editor of the Thors genesis described the challenge of coming up with another superhero after the creation of Hulk: How do you make someone stronger than the strongest person - It finally came to me: Do not make him human make him a god. Since his readers were already well familiar with Roman and Greek mythology and their gods, it would be a twist to his audience to delve into the world of Norse legends. He decided to pick the old look-alike of Vikings of old with their flowing beards, battle clubs and the legendary horned helmets. But something or someone was needed to headline the book Journey into Mystery and Thor was picked.

Thors debut in Journey into Mystery title science fiction/fantasy anthology was plotted by Lee and scripted by his brother. The 13-page feature of Thor comic series would run from 1964 with the number 101 title until title 179 in August of 1970. The addition of the five-page featurette to the Journey into Mystery title number 97 of Tales of Asgard and later on by the The Mighty Thor featurette came to be the dominant cover logo of the number 104 issue. Now that the Journey into Mystery title was replaced by The Mighty Thor, the Thor comic took on a new turn. A changing creative team over the next years would see the integration of many elements of traditional Norse mythology into the title and even some specific stories of old would be translated into the comics form.

Thor comic series took on a new turn beginning in the 1990s when the comic series was removed from the Marvel mainstream continuity following the Heroes Reborn crossover event. Other sequential features would follow like The Lost Gods, Master of Kung Fu, Hannibal King and Black Widow. Thor comic series would return to the Marvel Universe in 1998 with a new line of writers and co-writers with the crossover storyline running until 2004. A Thor comic third title would also premier in 2007 entitled Thor and in January of 2009, this third volume would revert to issue number 600 replacing number 13. What a long history of Thor comic and mythology that has continued to entertain us down the decades.
