If you are going to school, talk with whomever is helping you with admissions about where you should be renting and where you should avoid at all costs. They can generally tell you where the good and bad areas within the city are located and can steer you towards a decent area with affordable rents. They may also be able to hook you up with other students living off campus that have already secured a good apartment in a nice neighborhood.
