If a move is in your future, but you are not quite sure where you want to go, you have to think about what is most important to you. You may need to be where your industry is hiring. Perhaps you have family and you want to be closer to them. If you have children, finding the best of everything for them may just be your biggest priority. Perhaps you want to find a way to include all three in your move. If schooling for your child is you biggest worry, you may want to think about what rural schools can offer your children.
Some areas have better schools than others. That is just the way it is. Some cities have great schools, but more often than not they have challenges. Each state has different views on funding, and some simply have to cut funding to their schools because the money is not there. When this happens, all schools in that state suffer, but for some reasons, rural schools do not seem to be hit quite as hard. Perhaps they just deal with it better and find other funding. Some very small schools end up consolidating with other small schools in the area, but that does not happen very often.
Overall, many find that their children get more attention in rural schools, no matter what happens with state and school funding. There are some schools in more rural areas that suffer from overcrowding, but that is the exception not the rule. They also have a safer school environment overall, which allows both students and teachers the ability to focus on study rather than worrying about safety. This can make a big difference, especially for students that have had worries. Rural areas are not without these problems, but they are few and far between at most.
There are some smaller cities that offer the same benefits as most rural schools. These cities often have a large number of schools within the district to give each neighborhood their own elementary and even middle school. This offers the benefits of rural schools, like smaller classrooms and teachers everyone knows, all the while allowing parents to live where they are more likely to find a good job. The drawback may be that there are often only one or two high schools, but if the early education is good, the overall performance of the district is probably good too.
The best thing parents can do, whether they are considering rural schools or not, is to talk to someone about the district in question. If you have lived near this area, you may already know a few things about the school district in question. Talk to graduates if you can find some (hint look online) and see what they have to say about their school experience and how they feel about their educational experience as a whole. There are good schools out there, and if you want to relocate, you have a chance to find a good one.
