The area around my desk used to be a complete mess of wires from my PC and all its peripherals. Between the speakers, mouse, keyboard, printer, scanner, router, and external hard disk, I could barely move my chair or walk to the door without tripping over something. Fortunately, the advent of Bluetooth and Wifi allowed me to get rid of some of those wires, and now I'm going even further by shopping for wireless computer keyboards.
At first, I was a bit hesitant to jump on the wireless computer keyboards bandwagon because I wondered how many batteries I'd have to go through. I work online for about 10 hours per day, so keeping all my PC gear and equipment in tiptop shape is a must. I would hate to have to interrupt what I'm doing in order to change batteries or whatever. I also worried about the fact that wireless computer keyboards leave users more vulnerable to data interception by hackers. This is an important, valid concern that people who work with confidential information should definitely take into consideration.
But upon further reflection, decided that the convenience and functionality of wireless computer keyboards outweigh these perceived threats. As far as the battery problem goes, I'll just keep two sets of rechargeables on hand. That way as soon as one set runs out, I can install the others while recharging and not miss a beat. As far as hacking goes, the most sensitive data I ever type out is my bank account PIN. I'll just have to take extra precautions when checking my account and be extra vigilant about paying attention to transactions.
Why do people use wireless computer keyboards anyway? What are the benefits? Well, the most important one for me would be desktop clutter. I hate having these wires and cables splayed out everywhere across my desk. I can't tell you how many times I've moved something and had a wire inadvertently knock over a drink that was sitting nearby. That's a major annoyance for sure! Another benefit of using wireless computer keyboards is that they free up a USB port on your tower. I have an older machine that only has a couple of USB ports, so not having to plug my keyboard in anymore would be a plus. In addition, wireless computer keyboards provide a measure of mobility. Some people have their computers hooked up to their televisions in order to take advantage of the bigger screen. Being able to move the keyboard away from their desk then allows them to do their computing from the couch, kitchen, bed, etc. This isn't necessarily something I need, but it's nice to know I can do it if I want to.
Anyway, I'm already sold on wireless computer keyboards and will be buying one soon. I hope it turns out to be every bit as spectacular as I'm expecting it to be!
