When I was a child, my parents enrolled me in piano music lessons with a local teacher. At first, I thought it was the most boring part of my week, but as time went by, I started to really enjoy them and still benefit from them in certain ways to this very day.
I think I was about eight when I first started with my piano music lessons, and it was very confusing for me. There were so many keys and the notes were hard for me to figure out. My fingers were short and stubby and I had difficulty reaching the keys. I told my parents almost immediately that I wanted to quit, but they made me stick with it, and I am glad they did.
I quickly started to pick it up, and before long was playing fairly well. It was not long before I was introduced to another great passion of mine, which is classical music, and then I became extremely grateful that I had taken piano music lessons. Not only could I listen to this beautiful style of music, but I could actually play some of it before too long.
Besides learning how to play a musical instrument, taking piano music lessons helped me in other ways. It taught me a sense of commitment and dedication that has carried on throughout my life. I never quit something when it gets too hard, unless I am certain that whatever I am doing is going nowhere.
Piano music lessons also instilled a discipline in me that has allowed me to work on my own for most of my life, because I can create a schedule for myself and follow it to the letter. I don't have trouble with sticking to a daily work regimen, and I truly believe that these character traits were first developed when I was taking those lessons.
One of the other big advantages is purely selfish. Whenever I am at a party or social gathering and a piano is present, I love to make my way over and tickle the ivory, so to speak. Seeing the looks on people's faces as I play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, or some other classical piece, is priceless!
My wife gets a big kick out of it as well, as she is musically inclined, and she loves to sing along as I play the piano. Ours was definitely a match made in heaven.
Piano music lessons have helped me throughout my entire life and in many different ways. I am grateful to my parents for having me take them, and I have had my son and daughter take them as well. I just hope they benefit as much from them as I have.
