Big Lebowski Merchandise

In 1998, a movie was released that eventually became a cult hit. The Big Lebowski's legion of fans quote from the film whenever moved to do so and there is plenty of Big Lebowski merchandise to keep the film alive in people's minds. The story of Jeffrey Lebowski, or The Dude as he prefers to be known, caught the imagination. Directed, written and produced by Ethan and Joel Coen, it is a typical Coen Brothers project with eccentric characters and an intriguing plot.

The Dude, played by Jeff Bridges is a 'slacker' in Los Angeles, only concerned with things he shouldn't be doing and bowling. When he is mistaken for a man with the same name who happens to be a millionaire, The Dude's life becomes very complicated. It seems that the millionaire owes some thugs a large amount of money and the thugs come after The Dude. Best buddy Walter (John Goodman) shares in the adventure. The oft-repeated dialogue in the film is reproduced on a range of T-shirts, depicting pictures of The Dude and Walter too. There is also a replica Gold Team Bowling Shirt. Other Big Lebowski merchandise includes a line in posters featuring stills and artwork from the film.

The film is available on various DVD and VHS releases. The 1997 VHS has language options for English, Spanish, Hebrew and German. There is also a 1998 DVD with subtitles available in English, French and Dutch. Another DVD from the same year came out as a Special Edition in wide screen format. Compilation DVDs and VHS releases of the Coen Brothers' productions are also available including the VHS of Big Lebowski, Barton Fink and the Coen's debut, Blood Simple. The DVD box set, The Coen Brother's Collection has a picture of a bowling ball on the cover and contains four films; The Big Lebowski, The Hudsucker Proxy, Barton Fink and Blood Simple. There is more Big Lebowski merchandise with the inclusion of the film on the DVD, The Complete Coen Collection 1984-2004.

One of the elements to make the film so well liked is the soundtrack. It's made up of songs from very different styles and is available on CD, vinyl and audiocassette. Artists featured include Bob Dylan, Nina, Simone, Elvis Costello, Kenny Rogers and the First Edition, Henry Mancini and the Gipsy Kings. The movie even has an annual festival dedicated to celebrating it in different American cities. This has resulted in more Big Lebowski merchandise. The four curators of the festival have written a book about the event, titled I'm a Lebowski, You're a Lebowksi: Life, The Big Lebowski and What Have You. The illustrated book is a guide to the film and has interviews with some of the stars. There is also a soundtrack listing, a glossary of terms and quiz questions.
