Emergency Response Jobs

If you want to work in a field that allows you to help people, you can always go to school to be a doctor, nurse, teacher, or even a therapist. However, there are other jobs out there that need qualified and dedicated people. Emergency response jobs can be very exciting, and often those in these jobs are the first on a scene or that help someone to stay alive. It can be a very fulfilling career choice. If this sounds good to you, think about your options for work and for education, and the weigh your options as you search for a good job.

There are a few different categories in emergency response jobs. Most require at least some basic training, and others require quite a bit of education. How much you have to learn or what programs you have to go through depends on what you want to do. Know that at the very least, you have to be certified in first aid and CPR. Those basic skills save a lot of lives. You are not going to do anyone any good if you do not know how to do those things. Those that are certified have to retake the test every so often, usually once a year to stay current and to renew the certification.

When you think of emergency response jobs, you probably think of those that drive an ambulance. This is often an exciting job, but not all of the calls are going to be life and death. Some times, an ambulance is needed to transport someone from one medical facility to another. The ambulance is used because the patient should be stable, but may need medical attention along the way. Emergency calls are more common in more populated areas, as you can imagine. You need to get special training to be an EMT.

Those that man the 911 lines are also those in emergency response jobs. It might seem like they just answer the phone, ask you what is wrong, and then send the appropriate help, but there is a lot more to this type of job. Those that answer the phones should have CPR and first aid training so that they can tell someone how to keep someone alive until help arrives. They must be calm and have a mind quick enough to allow them to help someone in a panic, as most people calling 911 are in. What you must have in the way of training depends on the requirements where you live.

Police and firefighters are also people in emergency response jobs. As you may have guessed, both have extensive training to make sure they can do their jobs but also so that they know what to do in the event of an emergency. They are often on the scene of an accident before an ambulance can arrive. Though their types of emergencies do not always include savings lives, they take knowing what to do very seriously. Either of these careers can be very rewarding as well.
