The new trend in dating: Dating older women views from both genders

There's a new trend afoot in the world of dating. Perhaps not exactly brand new, but certainly becoming a prevalent phenomena: men dating older women. Men today seem to find something intriguing about dating older women. Similarly, older women find younger men fascinating. However, there are two sides to this story. Some men find that dating older women is more interesting, while others feel threatened by these 'cougars'. Yes, that's the vernacular term attributed to women who date younger men. It's interesting that men have a less complimentary moniker they are called 'boy toys', guys who like older women. So let's take a look and get a perspective from both men and women.

Men feel that older women are less flighty, more sophisticated and understand men better than a younger woman. Conversations with older women are more substantive. Men also say that older women have shed such bad habits as nagging, are not as overtly jealous and are just generally more in touch with what pleases men in a relationship.

On the minus side, men feel older women tend to carry 'baggage', in the form of previous relationships, children and family ties. Dating older women may also preclude starting a family. The older woman has been there, done that. Some of these older women may just be looking for a 'fling', resulting in the hapless man feeling that he's been used. Other men may also complain of the symptoms of women going through menopause. Health problems which come upon this older woman may also throw a wrench in the works of the relationship.

Women also find that dating younger men is a two-sided coin. While, from the woman's point of view, younger men are more exciting and adventurous. Women say they're not boring couch potatoes, as so many older men are. Perhaps the most famous pair are Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. She may be old enough to be his mother and he's young enough to be a sibling to her kids. I know, slap my hand for pointing this out, but it does highlight one of the perspectives on this dating phenomena.

On the other hand, women also note that too many of these younger men seem to be looking for a free lunch, or a mother figure. Women with high paying careers often find that younger men have financial expectations that have nothing to do with romance. They also say that one of the down sides of dating younger men is that they lack maturity. For example, a younger man may trip himself up with some old line that their peer use with success with an ingnue, but don't pass the laugh test with an older woman. Younger men, dating older women, are also more prone to barely disguised whining and childish behavior.

Both men and women seem to eventually conclude that there are advantages and disadvantages to the disparity in age. Couples who are roughly of the same age have problems of their own. Just like every other couple on the planet. Personally, it's difficult for me to see why this reversal of the normal dating patterns is so popular. The potential problems of men dating older women seem to be far greater for both parties. How about you?
