Buying a bed for cats involves more than a trip to the pet shop!

Every cat owner knows, or learns that while felines are lovable, soft and cuddly companions, there's no question that cats are finicky creatures, with more opinions on how life should be structured (to their satisfaction) than you can shake a stick at! From food to toys to where they sleep, they've got an opinion on what's acceptable and what's not. Almost every cat is up for some petting and lavish amounts of attention, but when it comes to what they find attractive, there's almost no telling. Where they sleep is a particular point of contention.

Choosing a bed for cats is not as easy as you'd think. If you've got other cats, or previously had cats as pets, you know about their persnickety habits. You also need to know that while one cat may savor a specific type of kitty bed quarters, another may disdain the style and even color of the exact same bed.

Some won't even use a bed for cats, preferring your velvet couch or your own bed.

When you purchase a bed for cats, it's not returnable. Before you spend a pretty penny on Kitty's bed, spend a little time observing your cat's behavior and personality. Cats are as individual as people. Perhaps this is what makes them interesting pets. However, cats are notoriously fussy, in far greater numbers than found in the human population. Here are some tips to guide you in (hopefully) choosing a bed that meets with Kitty's approval.

Is catnip his thing? Kitties who go crazy over catnip often approve of a bed for cats which is designed with a zipper opening which houses a replaceable pouch of catnip. Other such kitty beds come with a cloth bag of catnip, attached with a sturdy tie at the front of the bed.

Lay a large, open grocery bag on the floor. Does Kitty pounce on the bag, snuggling inside, playing with it for a while and then finally settling down for a nap? This cat will probably endorse the type of cat bed with an enclosed design, one shaped like a little house, which makes this kitty feel secure.

How about high places? Does your cat find the top of the frig or a tall bookcase his perch of choice? In this case the bed for cats which is part of a piece of cat furniture, with toys dangling from branches he can jump to on his way to bed, a sturdy platform near the top might be his heart's desire, furnishing him with a sleeping spot from which he can keep his eye on the rest of the world.
