Anyone who tries to keep up with the best in technology is bound to get tired of the rat race one day. But if you thought that the pace of new model introduction in digital cameras, laptops and other stuff was just too fast to make any sense, try an app phone on for size. As unnatural as the speed of progress in technology seems everywhere else, in mobile phone models that can run apps, that speed is practically runaway.
For the latest smart phones, the top of the line today has to be a model that runs Google's Android operating system. Things used to go much more slowly - Motorola's Razr was a phone that stayed on the market for at least three years and sold really well the whole time. Today, Motorola's Droid smart phone shows up and seems to be as big as its name suggests. But before you have a chance to really make up your mind, something with even more buzz and hype shows up, like the Sprint Evo. Before you have any time to get used to the idea, there's the HTC Incredible.
Motorola's Droid barely had a chance to make a name for itself before the competition came piling on; and so, it has to come out with something it claims is even better - the Droid X. And unless you are the iPhone or the Blackberry, it's really difficult to establish yourself well enough that you could command a real premium price. The Droid X on Verizon will go for $200, and you'll have the option of buying the unlimited Internet plan for less than $100 a month. The original Droid had a great tactile keyboard; mobile phone models that don't compete with the iPhone's multi-touch screen though seem as dead as the dinosaur, and the new and improved Droid has a touch screen, and comes with four physical buttons as opposed to the iPhone's one. There is one for the menu, a Search button, a Home and Back button, and a very useful Camera button.
But the Droid X seems to finally be differentiating itself in the mad world of smart mobile phone models by pulling away from tradition (and tradition in today's world means the iPhone). The look itself is pretty distinct - the phone is thin enough, but where the camera is, the lens sits atop a little mound that gives the phone a threatening and confident look. And can you guess where they really innovate? It's in 4.3 inches of screen real estate that makes the iPhone's screen seemed positively medieval. When you type on the screen, your fingers actually fit in the keys. Should all mobile phone models place screen size ahead of everything else? It depends on personal taste of course, but Motorola's finally found a way to stand out as the leader again.
Motorola's made its phone absolutely powerful with noise cancellation microphones, WiFi, GPS, a great speaker, an eight megapixel camera, a vibrator that can actually go through to your skin past a thick coat, and the greatest thing is, (actually there are three) - it works with Verizon, the best network in the land, it plays Flash, and it has a supercharged processor.
They have an agreement with Blockbuster where you can download the latest movies to watch on your TV (it has HDMI). Motorola has always had buggy software though, and it needs to work on this. The Android marketplace is closing in on 100,000 apps, and things are beginning to look exciting. If you are one of the iPhone holdouts and are looking anxiously at the coming parade of mobile phone models for a worthy replacement, the Droid X is your man.
